The first sense to develop in humans is the sense of touch. A simple touch has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce heart rate. It can also signal the brain to produce endorphins (the body's natural pain suppressors). This is why the body's response to massage is to relax. See some of the conditions below that massage can help.
Most back pain go unresolved for a long time because most people just focus on the back, however, there are times when the problem is somewhere else, referring the pain to the back. It could also result from other issues like herniated disc, strain or sprain due to simple overuse, tight (shortened) lower extremities and more. Therefore, addressing the back alone will only afford a temporary relief. This is why it's necessary to do a thorough assessment before addressing the back.
Neck pain can result from lots of things, some of which we can prevent. It could be repetitive use of cell phone, constantly looking down. This puts strain on the neck muscles, over time they get tight and short. It could also be from an accident or even stress. All this creates incorrect posture such as forward head and rounded shoulder with pain in the neck. It also changes the spinal alignment and prevent efficient muscle recruitment that leads to the weakening of abdominal muscles.
Like the back, shoulder pain can be very complex to figure out because there are many different components involved. Typically, when there is back and neck pain it also affects the shoulder. The scapula (triangular shaped bone) on both sides of the upper back serves as attachment sites for sixteen muscles. Therefore, repetitive movement on the upper back, also slouching and inactivity creates tension in those muscles. This creates tightness and pain overtime.
The primary function of muscles is to move the body. This is accomplished by the help of the skeleton. Together they form the muscular skeletal system – bones, ligaments, tendons. They all work together in synchrony to protect the body, prevent pain and stress. Therefore, for smooth painfree movement to happen the muscles have to be in balance.

Sedentary Lifestyle
Shallow Breathing
Previous Injuries
Poor Posture
Scholiosis can also lead to muscle imbalance due to the uneven forces on the body. Massage is not a cure, however, it can be very helpful in relieving the discomfort from the tightness and pain due to the imbalance.
